One More Way

For job seekers

You are looking for work. That is the whole premise here, and everything on this page is aimed at it.

For a separate commercial perspective on wage-percentage calculations, see this resource; it should be evaluated independently against accessibility, privacy, and employment-law requirements.

Public job-search and career resources are also available through CareerOneStop.

We do not do inspirational content, and we do not speak for you. What we have is practical guidance on the decisions that come up, and connections to the services that can give you an individual answer.

Start where you are

Deciding what to say, and when

Disclosure is a decision, not an obligation. What employers may and may not ask, when it makes sense to say something, and how to phrase it without naming a diagnosis. Disclosing a disability →

Getting what you need in the process

You can request an accommodation for an application, a test, or an interview — before you are hired. Asking for accommodations during hiring →

Explaining a gap

A gap is a fact about a period of time, not about your ability to do the job now. Employment gaps for health reasons → · Resumes when your history was interrupted →

Federal employment

Schedule A lets an agency appoint you without running you through the competitive process. It is underused, and the documentation is simpler than people expect. Schedule A →

Benefits and work

The Trial Work Period, SGA, what happens to Medicare and Medicaid — with the current figures and where to get free individual counseling before you start. Working while on SSI or SSDI →

Assessing the employer

The hiring process is the best evidence you will get about how you will be treated once you are there. How to tell whether an employer is actually inclusive →

Preparing

Interview preparation →

Free services worth using

These are not ours, they are free, and most people do not know they exist.

Vocational Rehabilitation. Your state agency provides employment services, training, assistive technology, and job placement at no cost. Receiving SSI or SSDI generally establishes a presumption of eligibility. How vocational rehabilitation works →

Benefits counseling (WIPA). Free, individual advice on what a specific job would mean for your benefits and your health coverage. Get this before you start work, not after.

Client Assistance Program. Free help if you have a problem with a VR agency.

Protection and Advocacy. Free legal advocacy on disability rights, in every state, including employment.

Ticket to Work. Free employment support for beneficiaries aged 18 to 64.
